One Piece Chapter 986 Review: Your Name?
After the absolute bombshells of Chapter 985, I was highly anticipating this chapter. Then, a statement from Oda’s editor came out, saying that this chapter made him cry—the hype was real! The scans were realized this morning and I got right to reading. I’ve read it twice today.
So first we see the Scabbards taking on Orochi’s followers, who have now joined Kaido. They are about to execute Momonosuke. These forces are led by Kanjiro. This confrontation definitely gives me a Seven Samurai vibe. A tense stare down on the grassy battlefield. Another key piece of information is that we find out why Kiku was crying. We find out that he killed Kanjiro. This did not surprise me but it still hit me. Something I do want to see is the killing blow, maybe in a flashback or something. I liked this scene, but the next scene raises a lot of questions.
Big Mom has captured Nami and Carrot. The only reason this is so confusing to me is because they, without a doubt, are the weakest Straw Hats (Carrot is not a Straw Hat but she’s been with the group since Zou.) So I don’t know how they’ll get out of this situation especially because KING AND KAIDO COME TO EXECUTE MOMONOSUKE THEMSELVES. We also cut to Usopp, Franky and Chopper being chased by Queen and Black Maria. Everyone seems like they are in a tough spot. The next scene is extremely powerful and I can see why this made Oda’s editor cry.
Kaido grabs Momonosuke by his neck and keeps asking him: “What’s your name boy?” Momonosuke doesn’t answer. Kaido keeps threatening him but he doesn’t let up. “What’s your name?” He keeps asking as he grips his bat, ready to murder Momonosuke right there. Then, finally, seeing a glimpse of his parents, he exclaims: “I AM KOIZUKI MOMONOSUKE!!!” This scene was fantastic and gut wrenching. Kaido gets ready to kill Momonosuke, but we cut to Luffy and Yamato jumping down from the top floor of the castle. Luffy removes Yamato’s exploding shackles and they go to save Momonosuke. Just as Kaido is about to deal the finishing blow, The nine Scabbards all attack Kaido. Wow. It was incredible. I feel like the past 10 chapters have just been building up to an amazing fight scene. But this may be the chapter when the fight finally breaks out. I’m not sure if the nine Scabbards will even survive. But they are devoted to their leader’s son and they’ll fight against the strongest beast just to save him. Truly powerful. I can’t wait to see where this goes.
